Overall notes:

1st Combat Assault Battalion - one of the more cryptic units to be deciphered, this unit has many possible TOEs. It could have 2 tank companies and 2 AAV companies, (or at least used to – came from Naval Institute Guide circa 2005), it could have that and a LAV company according to the 1989 NATO orbat , or, as its most probable organization, it has 1 AAV company and one LAV company, according to Wikipedia and another website. The AAV Company probably has 47 AAVP7A1 of all variants; the LAV Company probably has 14 LAVs and 4 (?) LAV-ATs.

LARB – Another elusive TOE. The 1989 orbat lists 3 Companies and a Weapons Company. Official 1999 and 2000 USMC TOEs gives each LARB 4 Cos, for 60 LAV-25s, 16 LAV-ATs, and 8 LAV-Ms. However, Osprey’s LAV-25 says that in 2006-2007, another five companies were added to the four LAV battalions. That does not even out, unless two of those companies were added to the MFR. I also do not know if this is compensated for the company of LAVs with the 1st CAB. For lack of concrete evidence of the five phantom LAV companies, I have kept LAV battalions with their original TOE.

AAB Battalion: The last enigmatic unit. Official 1999 USMC TOE gives it 213 AAVP-7s. 1989 orbat gives it 187 AAVP-7s. The Naval Institute Guide gives it 187 also, as does an edition of Assault. Therefore I went the most often cited strength: 187.

VMGR: Each Squadron has 3 Harvest HAWKs (Hercules Airborne Weapons Kit), which gives the equipped KC-130Js area-denial and strike capability with up to 4 Hellfires and 10 Griffin missiles.

Aviation Squadron Strength: Squadron gives a/c counts that are usually just under or above authorized strength. This reflects the fact that some a/c are rotated in storage, some are on UDP missions, and others are attached to other units. The authorized squadron strengths are as follows:

VMFA: 12 F/A-18

HMLA: 9 UH-1, 18 AH-1

VMM: 12 MV-22B

HMM: 12 CH-46E

HMH: 12 CH-53

VMA: 16 AV-8

VMGR: 12 KC-130J

VMAQ: 5 EA-6B

Reserve: Many USMC units were listed as having extra, inactive companies that either were stood up in the event of intensive conflict or were activated once they were transferred from the Marine Force Reserve. I have not included these units in my figures.

UDP/Detachments/Unit Strengths: USMC units are continuously rotating around the world on multiple deployments, so some unit strengths are either over strength (on deployment) or understrength (contributing to a deployment). Therefore some unit strengths are not as complete as wished.
