A category of weapon type in the Command model.
A Torpedo is an underwater weapon with a propulsion system, and is fired from airborne, ship, or submarine platforms. Early torpedo types were unguided. These may be "straight runners" or they may follow a pre-programmed pattern after launch. Current versions have passive and/or active sonar guidance. Torpedos may also have wire guidance, where commands are sent from the launch platform to the torpedo along a wire which is unspooled from the torpedo after launch. Modern versions have two-way wire guidance, where data from the torpedo sonar may be sent back down the wire to the launch platform. This enables a launching submarine to remain hidden behind an acoustic layer while using the torpedo's passive and active sonar to locate and attack the target.
