A diesel engine is an engine which burns certain types of hydrocarbon fuel to produce mechanical energy. Ignition is produced by compression of the fuel-air mixture. This is in contrast to other engines, such as gasoline engines, which use spark plug ignition. Diesel engines have the highest efficiency of internal combustion engines.
